Why Study Accounting at 17勛圖?

The accounting major is designed to prepare students with the knowledge, the analytical ability, and the skills to succeed in the managerial, governmental, nonprofit or systems fields of accounting, or in graduate school. It is supported by a strong liberal arts education and an extensive selection of courses in business and economics. A unique program 17勛圖 Accounting is proud to offer students, and the community is the VITA Tax Preparation Service.

Accounting Sample Courses

There are 41 credit hours of courses in accounting, business, mathematics, and economics. You will take a core of accounting courses covering budgeting, financial statements, effects of cost on revenues, tax laws, and microcomputer accounting software.

Basic theory, concepts, and methodology of accounting. Valuation and income determination, internal control systems, and basic financial statement preparation.

principles of management

An introduction to the management functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling and how they are evolving in today business environment. An emphasis is placed on the management and mobilization of people to achieve organizational goals.

intermediate accounting

Analysis of the theory, concepts, principles, and procedures underlying the preparation of financial statements for external reporting.

Careers in Accounting

financial auditor

A financial auditor reviews a company financial statements, documents, data, and accounting entries. Financial auditors gather information from a company financial reporting systems, account balances, cash flow statements, income statements, balance sheets, tax returns, and internal control systems.

tax accountant

Tax accountants work with clients to produce tax return documents that follow laws and regulations. Throughout the filing process, they keep clients updated on their return information.

An accountant helps businesses make financial decisions by collecting, tracking, and correcting the company finances. They are responsible for financial audits, reconciling bank statements, and ensuring financial records are accurate throughout the year.

payroll clerk

Payroll clerks are responsible for maintaining payroll information by collating, calculating, and entering data. They also update records with changes in employee details or benefits, like job titles, that might occur over time.

Why Pursue an African American Studies Minor?

The African American studies minor is designed for students who want to explore the African American experience from a variety of perspectives, both historical and contemporary. While the program is useful for personal development, it should also enhance students careers in a variety of areas, from law and medicine to education and politics.

African American Studies Minor Sample Courses

African American Literature

A study of selected African American literary works that explore significant cultural and social issues and major themes as they have been depicted or reflected within the scope of African American writings. The course explores important themes and motifs inherent in African American literature and how those themes are relevant to current issues.

African American History

A study of the political, social, and economic history of African Americans from African societies and the slave trade to the present. This course focuses on the interpretation and analysis of the central problems and themes of United States history from the perspective of African American history. Topics include slavery, transnational black communities and cultures, the significance of gender and class, segregation, and civil rights struggles.

Multiculturalism and the Media

Students will watch a series of documentary films that looked into the way gender, ethnicity, age, and nationality are presented in the media. Meanwhile, theyll have a face-to-face conversation with practitioners and scholars from the U.S. and other nations to discuss hot-button topics in our society, including the origins of stereotypes and the representation of gender and ethnicity in media. Ultimately, students are expected to have a comprehensive understanding of race, gender, sexual preference, religion, nationality, and even age.

Program Highlights

Agriculture collegiate young farmers club

Open to all students interested in agriculture, this group sponsors events each year, including a number of field trips. Students travel locally and beyond and explore opportunities. Common events include the Young Farmers Discussion Meet and attending the national FFA convention, as well as other conferences and events.

Introduction to Plant Science

An introduction to the biology of vascular plants, including classification, structure, physiology, reproduction, and ecology. A collection is required in the laboratory portion of the course.

Animal Nutrition

This course will focus on introducing and practicing knowledge and skills in relation to animal nutrition. Students will be asked to apply the nutritional concepts they learn to a variety of potential situations they might encounter post-graduation.

Animal Science Minor Sample Courses

Countdown 2050: Science Literacy in the Anthropocene

This interdisciplinary course examines science literacy in the public health, agricultural, and environmental sectors. By examining controversies and rhetoric, students will explore how anti-scientism, public psychology and the death of expertise, and social media influence individual and public policy decision-making. 

Basic Domestic Animal Handling

Provides study of concepts in applied animal behavior to properly and safely handle animals, with a basic focus on restraint and containment with the most current humane and ethical practices. The course will also focus in zoonosis and risk assessment with the parameters of domestic animal handling while providing an experiential component to practice at the 100 level.

Livestock Evaluation and Judging

Covers comparative judging and statistical trait evaluation of livestock conformation and performance, using various formats, from live judging to spreadsheet records, to broaden student experience.

Mathematics studies concepts related to quantity, space, change, pattern, and structure. 17勛圖’s Applied Mathematics curriculum allows students to learn areas of mathematics, such as Calculus and Statistics, while developing the ability for deductive reasoning and problem-solving. The 17勛圖 B.S. in Applied Mathematics prepares students who plan to pursue careers in business, industry, government, and beyond.

Applied Mathematics Sample Courses

Differential equations and linear algebra

In this class, students will create and solve equations that:

  • Answer population dynamics questions, such as, “How does a population grow when competing with a different population for resources?”
  • Predict future predator and prey populations
  • Predict global temperature changes

PRE-CALCULUS

In this course students will study basic mathematical functions, systems of linear equations, and applications of mathematics to business and science. Functions studied include polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic functions.

Intermediate statistics

Students start by learning how to use the R language for statistical computing to implement statistical techniques covered in Introductory Statistics. They simultaneously learn how to use R Markdown to write reproducible reports of statistical analyses in R.

Actuarial Analyst

Uses data to measure risk for a company or organization, such as an insurance company or a financial services business.

Data Analyst

Collects and stores data on sales numbers, market research, logistics, linguistics, or other behaviors. They bring technical expertise to ensure the quality and accuracy of that data, then process, design, and present it in ways to help people, businesses, and organizations make better decisions.

Mathematician

Mathematicians help organizations by applying mathematical theories and techniques to solve practical problems. They collect data, analyze this data, and present their findings with the aim of solving practical problems in business, government, engineering, and science.

ArtGraphic Design Minor Sample Courses

Two-Dimensional Design

Two-Dimensional Design is an introduction to the basic language of art and design on a flat plane. Problems/projects are organizational, conceptual, and thought provoking to challenge and introduce the basic elements and principles of art. It is the intent of this studio experience to establish a disciplined, efficient, and practical use of art tools and materials.

The Color Course

The Color Course is a foundation course emphasizing the hue, value, and saturation of color and the application of that knowledge to the visual arts. This course emphasizes deliberate and clear presentation for maximum effect. This course is open to all curious students and does not rely upon representational drawing skills.

Photoshop

This is an introduction to Adobe Photoshop, which is the cross-industry standard software for editing raster-based images. Students will work from a variety of sources, including stock images, scans, personal images and their own unique in-system compositions. Students will be introduced to the techniques of creating, editing, and processing images in the Photoshop environment and organizational skills within Adobe Bridge. Connections to analogue studio techniques will be introduced, including visits to the chemical process photography lab. This is not a photography course, and students are not required to purchase a camera.

Digital Sculpture

This course offers intensive explorations of digital tools required for the production of 3D elements and models, as well as their usage. Students will use a variety of software to explore cad/cam production as well as solid model sculpting. Students will also output tangible media through the use of laser cutting, 3D printing, and CNC routing.

Renaissance to Contemporary Art

Students study art history from the Renaissance on through current trends in contemporary artistic movements. This course will place specific emphasis on major developments in artistic creation while acknowledging the political, social, and cultural trends that influenced the art of those times.
